Aiming to strengthen its newsgathering facilities, Doordarshan has approved a proposal for establishing a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminals) network at 70 places all over the country with a central hub at Delhi. Action for procurement of VSAT has already been initiated, said an official release, adding that establishment of the VSAT network would enable news feed from the 70 places to National/Regional News Units through satellite. This network would also enable voice and data communication among the places, where these VSATs are set up.

The release added that Doordarshan's proposal for a pilot project in high definition television (HDTV), a digital transmission technology that would result in higher resolution broadcast has been recently approved. As part of this project, facility for field production in HDTV is envisaged to be set up at Delhi in 2007-08.
