NEW INSIGHTS: Mr Muthukumar Ramalingam, CEO, Dextrasys Technologies,Tiruchi, interacting with management students of Bishop Heber College during a Business Line Club meeting on Tuesday. — R.M. Rajarathinam

Tiruchi April 10 IT and ITES are now transforming into knowledge-driven services. Some of the biggest names in IT and business are heading towards India once more, but now they seek brightest minds - not cheap labour, said Mr Muthukumar Ramalingam, Chief Executive Officer, Dextrasys Techynologies Pvt Ltd., Tiruchi.

More than 100 IT and science-based firms have located their research and development laboratories in India to tap innovative ideas, Mr Muthukumar said making a presentation on the topic, `Becoming a knowledge super power; opportunities for us' that marked the launch of Business Line Club at Bishop Heber College on Tuesday.

Having established a leadership role in cost-driven IT services - outsourcing engagements, and support and training - and ITES-BPO - customer interaction services, finance and accounting, and human resource administration - the knowledge-enabled services that India has begun to render are in the areas of logistics and supply chain, engineering, legal and intellectual property, publishing, contract research, and research and development and innovation.

Career opportunities will spring up in several other areas including design, biotechnology and pharma, gaming content creation, and financial data and market research.

Knowledge services industry in the country is expected to register 45 per cent growth per annum, wresting 70 per cent of the $17-billion global business. As societies everywhere begin to grey, India will provide support to the world. The advantages of a career in knowledge-enabled services are the opportunity to work with modern technology, exposure to a broader range of science and technology and business domains, scope for development by virtue of special knowledge in analysis, and technical, scientific and legal reasoning, and technical writing and communication skills.

Mr. Muthukumar urged students to augment their knowledge by reading business dailies on a day-to-day basis and acquiring additional qualifications in financial research, market research, animation, and intellectual property rights to flourish in the knowledge economy.
