Gamma Knife brain surgery

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, April 10

Dr Dheerendra Prasad, Chairman of the Gamma Knife Unit at the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute (New York), has claimed that non-invasive brain surgery using the Gamma Knife saves patients from pain and cuts down on recovery time.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the procedure could be used for brain disorders ranging from tumours, vascular malformations to facial pain. However, not all cases can be tackled using this method. The procedure also shows a high success rate, he said. Prof A.K. Purohit, Head of Neurosurgery Department at NIIMS (Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences), said there was a proposal to set up a Gamma Knife facility at the hospital.
