Scotland seeks investment in ITES, life sciences

Our Bureau

Chennai April 10 Scotland seeks to expand ties with Indian business houses, Mr Shivendra Singh, Country Manager (India), Scottish Development International, told Business Line.

The Scottish Development International is a joint venture between Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise.

Vision

Its vision is to fully integrate Scotland's international economic development activities with an annual budget of $700 million and its network of 21 offices — in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Being a Government-funded organisation, it helps businesses exploit Scotland's key strengths in knowledge-based industries, high-level skills, technology and innovation.

Scotland places priority on sectors such as IT, ITES, life sciences, embedded software and animation and gaming for Indian investments, Mr Singh said.

Trained workforce

He noted that Scotland has a highly educated, well-trained workforce.

"And more interestingly, the attrition rate in Scotland is as low as 8-15 per cent," he said, adding that its multilingual call centres support 25 languages and enjoy the advantage of a time difference of 7-8 hours from the US.

Education

Scotland is also encouraging students from India to join Scottish universities for PG programmes.

"With less than 10 per cent of UK population, Scottish universities produced over 21 per cent of the UK's higher and postgraduate degrees in Computer Science," he said.
