After the Centre, it is the turn of the States to take to gender budgeting. While Madhya Pradesh, taking a cue from the Centre, has incorporated gender budgeting as part of its 2007-08 annual Budget exercise, Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar are apparently planning to do the same from the coming financial year.
The Madhya Pradesh Government's Budget, presented by its Finance Minister, Mr Raghavji, on February 26, introduced gender budgeting in 13 select departments. The fund allocation towards various schemes under these departments were, in turn, categorised under two heads. The first included schemes, where 100 per cent of expenditures were earmarked for women, and the second category comprised those where there was at least 30 per cent provision.
The total allocation under the identified schemes of the 13 departments rose from Rs 460.96 crore in the revised estimates for 2006-07 to Rs 571.53 crore in the budget estimate for the current fiscal. The Madhya Pradesh Government now proposes to take gender budgeting to the district level at the second stage.
