Science & Technology `Space varsity proposal awaiting Govt nod' Our Bureau
Bangalore April 11 ISRO says its `catch-them-young' proposal targeted at Plus-2 students will give it a captive talent of 150 a year. The ISRO Chairman, Mr G. Madhavan Nair, on Wednesday said the space university, proposed to start from this academic year at Thiruvananthapuram, should be able to draw youngsters to courses in space sciences and space technologies in the coming years. ISRO has said it needed about 300 scientists a year. The 7 per cent attrition was far below the infotech sector's 25 per cent. Yet, ISRO was unable to match the higher wage structure that the IT industry offered as it took the best students away. "The faculty will be drawn from ISRO. The cost will not be a problem as it will be part of our HRD plans," Mr Nair said. The proposal for a university is awaiting approval of the government.
COMMERCIAL LAUNCH
Agile, the Italian scientific satellite, will be ISRO's first full-fledged commercial launch. ISRO plans to fly the 350-kg satellite on its PSLV rocket for an estimated fee of $11 million. "International launch service providers charge $13-15,000 per kg to be flown," said Antrix Corporation ED, Mr K.R. Sridhara Murthi.
MARS MISSION
A Mars mission is next on the cards for ISRO, even as the lunar mission is just a year away. Technically, a 500-kg mission to the red planet can be pushed by the year 2012 using the proven GSLV rocket, Mr Nair said on the sidelines of a news conference here.
