SAIL will import more coal via Paradip, Haldia, Vizag ports

Kolkata April 12 Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is to step up its import of coal through the ports of Haldia, Paradip and Visakhapatnam by 30 per cent in 2007-08 vis-a-vis 2006-07.

An estimated 13 million tonnes (mt) of coal will be imported in 2007-08, up from about 10 mt in 2006-07 and the entire volume of the projected import will be routed through the three east coast ports.

Port-wise break up

The port-wise break-ups show SAIL will import through Haldia an estimated 6 mt in 2007-08 compared with 4.5 mt in 2006-07. The corresponding figures for the two other ports are Paradip 2 mt (1.7 mt) and Visakhapatnam 5 mt (3.8 mt).

While Haldia will cater to Durgapur Steel Plant, Bokaro Steel Plant, IISCO and Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL); Paradip will serve Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, Bokaro Steel Plant and IISCO; and Visakhapatnam, that of Bhilai Steel Plant and Rourkela Steel Plant.
