Tiruchi fabrication sector has scope for growth'

Tiruchi April 12 With Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) poised to invest over Rs.1,000 crore for augmenting the manufacturing capacity of its Tiruchi unit to 10,000 MW, there was potential for business and technological growth in the fabrication industry here, observed speakers at the inaugural of an international workshop on `Manufacturing Technology - Realms Ahead' here on Thursday.

Tiruchi has already emerged as a hub for welding and heavy engineering fabrication industry. The country's manufacturing sector was expected to grow rapidly and the BHEL was planning to invest over Rs. 4,000 crore to enhance the manufacturing capacities of its units across the country. With the BHEL, Tiruchi, planning to double its capacity, it would bring in a huge growth in the industry, said Mr S.M. Mahajan, Group General Manager, Central Foundry Forge Plant, BHEL, Haridwar.

The two-day workshop, Mantra 2007, was jointly hosted by the Welding Research Institute (WRI) of BHEL, Tiruchi, the Indian Institute of Metals and the Indian Welding Society to review the emerging trends and future directions of the manufacturing sector.

Mr.Mahajan called upon the ancillary units of BHEL to go in for mechanisation and adopt the latest technology, especially some of which have already come into application in Europe.

The Consultant of BHEL, Tiruchi, Mr S.Sathyanarayanan, said that BHEL has devised strategies for business and technology development. The company was working with world leaders and was also on the look out for acquisitions and mergers to become globally competitive. On the technology front, BHEL has planned to double its spending on research and development. Mr G. Uma Shankar, Head, WRI, said that the fabrication industry of Tiruchi could diversify into fabricating components for heavy automotives, Railways and the shipping industry.
