AP plans society to curb urban poverty

Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 12 The Andhra Pradesh Government has announced plans to set up a registered society called `Mission for Elimination of Extreme Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) on the lines of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).

The society, which would be registered by May 15, would cover all the BPL (below poverty line) households in the urban areas and help them form self-help groups (SHGs) in the next two years, a Government press release said.

This would help the urban poor get access to bank linkages and other poverty alleviation measures. Like in SERP or Indira Kranthi Patham (formerly Velugu), the SHGs in urban areas would get `pavala vaddi' loans (three per cent interest rate) to take up different self-employment activities.

At the district level, Project Management Units under the chairmanship of respective district collectors would guide the MEPMA programme.

General body

When it is fully operational, the society would consist of a Chairman (Chief Minister, 20-25 members, one Mission Director, 23 district level PMUs and 136 urban local body units.

The Government would issue an order on April 20 announcing the formation of society.
