SANDALWOOD LOGS being stacked at the Government Sandalwood Depot at Marayoor in Idukki district. The depot, which stores the logs collected from the Marayoor forest as well as those seized from smugglers, currently holds about 32 tonnes. The market value now is around Rs 2,000 a kg. The Kerala Government is planning to establish a sandalwood factory at Marayoor. The number of standing sandal trees in the 8,123-hectare forest is roughly 57,000.
