Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables States - West Bengal New wholesale flower market in May Our Bureau
Kolkata April 12 Kolkata will have a new wholesale flower market centre next month equipped with an auction hall, cold storage, a fleet of refrigerated vans and a wastage management system. This was stated today during a meeting at the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry by Mr S. Sil, a CPI (M) Lok Sabha member. "This will provide a platform for the State's small farmers, who have taken to floriculture in a big way," he added. Strategically located, the centre will be the new version of an old market, which for decades had remained devoid of proper infrastructure. He added that, currently, 70 per cent of the flowers that come to the wholesale market go to garbage dump at the end of the day. The State Government has already helped the trade set up three cold storages near the flower-growing areas. Orchids and flowers such as tuberose, rose and carnations from the State have found a steady market in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
