Tourism Cleaning the past Ranabir Ray Choudhury
HISTORIC STRUCTURE: The dome of the Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata being cleaned. The rotating bronze figure atop the dome is that of the Angel of Victory which is 16 ft high and weighs three tonnes. The cleaning of the monument, formally opened to the public in 1921, has been on for some time, the current state of atmospheric pollution in the city having taken its toll of the Hall. The monument was conceived by the Viceroy, Lord Curzon, at the turn of the 19th century, when Kolkata (then Calcutta) was still the capital of British India, and immediately after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901. The Memorial, which has today become a tourist attraction, was originally intended to be a "historical museum", a role which it has performed with distinction over the decades.
