Cabinet gives nod for PSU fert units revival

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 12 The Cabinet today gave its in-principle approval to revive eight closed units of public sector Fertiliser Corporation of India (FCI) and Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation Ltd (HFCL) and reverse the decision taken by the erstwhile NDA Government to close down the sick units, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi, told presspersons here on Thursday

The Cabinet has also decided to ask the Department of Fertilisers to explore the possibility of involving consultants for the revival plans, Mr Dasmunsi said. After the packages are ready, they would be placed before the Cabinet for a final approval, he said.

Out of the eight units to be revived, three belong to HFCL and five to FCI.

The HFCL units are located in Durgapur, Haldia and Barauni. The FCI units are located in Gorakhpur, Singri, Ramagundam, Talcher and Korba.

According to a note prepared by the Department of Fertiliser, revival of these companies, which would cost the exchequer a huge amount, would make the country self-reliant in urea production and bring down imports to almost zero levels in the future.
