CII plans survey on power needs of south TN districts

Forming core team to promote rural biz hubs


As a follow-up of the conference `Southern Prosperity Through Enhanced Economic Development' , awareness has spread on the need for development of the region.

Madurai April 13 The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will undertake a survey during the second quarter of the current year to highlight the requirement of power for industrialisation of south Tamil Nadu, according to Mr V. Krishnamurthy, Chairman, CII, Madurai Zone.

Unfolding the programme of the zone for 2007-08, the newly-elected Chairman, told presspersons on Friday that that CII is planning to form a core team to work with the Government for promotion of rural business hubs in the areas of agriculture and rural industries, especially in Theni and Dindigul districts.

As a follow-up of the conference `Southern Prosperity Through Enhanced Economic Development (SPEED)' held last year, awareness has spread on the need for development of the region, he said. With the supportive action initiated by the State Government, the progress has been on the positive side and the zone, to sustain continuity in action plan, has taken up as its theme `Reach South Tamil Nadu' with a three-year vision in thrust areas, mainly industry, infrastructure, tourism and agriculture, he said. Promotion of IT companies, development of cluster concept among SMEs in the region and harnessing the potential in quality and performance of various industries would form part of the industry initiatives.

With reference to infrastructure, upgradation of Madurai airport into an international airport along with a second runway, facilitation of operation of domestic and international air cargo movement at Tuticorin, double-laning of Tuticorin-Chennai rail track to facilitate free movement of cargo and deepening of the draught at Tuticorin Port to 14.5 mts, would be pursued, he said. Most importantly, the power scenario needs to be visualised on the basis of demand for the next 10 years and a survey would be taken up by CII, Mr Krishnamurthy added.

He said medical tourism would be combined with heritage tourism and promoted with the formation of a tourism committee under the chairmanship of District Collector in each district in south to identify and implementinitiatives.

Mr R. Dinesh, Vice-Chairman, CII, Madurai Zone said, along with Honeywell Technologies, CII will be organising an industry-academia workshop with the objective to provide an opportunity to enhance knowledge level in software engineering process and C++ through interaction with eminent professionals
