Animation academy in Vizag

Visakhapatnam April 13 Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (MACC), the animation and visual effects training institute, launched its first training centre at Dwarakanagar here on Friday.

At a press meet here on the occasion, Mr Kingshuk Gupta, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, said it was the fifty-third such centre in the country and two more would be set up soon by the academy, one at Secunderabad and the other at Coimbatore.

He said the academy was offering courses in computer graphics, animation and special effects, which is a booming industry.

"According to study by the Nasscom, 3 lakh animators would be needed in the country by 2008-09, but at present there are only a few thousand available. There is a huge demand-supply gap and our institute is trying to bridge it partly," he said.

He said animation at present was a $30-billion industry and in India the market was estimated at $550 million. The market was growing by leaps and bounds, as "there has been a convergence of IT, communication and entertainment industries."

He said the academy had centres in the UK, West Asia, Singapore and Nepal. "Maya is setting up centres in Dubai, Colombo and Jordan later this year," he added.

He said the fees would range from Rs 50,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakh for courses ranging from eight months to 18 months. Though there was no prescribed minimum educational qualification, at least the candidate should have passed the intermediate examination.
