Pune April 13

Pune's success story in information technology seems to be making great waves as its software exports for 2006-07 are expected to touch Rs 15,150 crore for the year ended March 2007.

The IT exports from the city for 2005-06 stood at Rs 9,423 crore. Giving the figures at the Dewang Mehta Memorial Lecture organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), Mr P. Venugopal, Director, Maharashtra Software Technology Park of India (STPI), said Pune is also recording a growth rate of 66 per cent this year compared with 60 per cent last year in 2005-06.

This is against the most favoured destination Bangalore, which stood at 34 per cent in 2005-06.

Mr Venugopal said Pune's contribution to the national exports has touched 11 per cent 2006-07 compared with 8.9 per cent in 2005-06 and 6.11 per cent in 2001-02.

He said the growth was because out of the 1,000 new companies that have set shop in the country about 114 of them have made Pune their base.

This accounts for about 11 per cent of the set ups in the country.

Mr Venugopal said these companies are expected to make a turnover of Rs 5,168 crore within the next five years and while requiring manpower of about 38,000.

He said the emerging opportunities, which the Pune IT industry could look at included IT services, re-engineering, embedded systems, e-commerce application, proof check in data entry segment, in infrastructure e-business operations, order processing etc.

Mr Ashank Desai, Founder and Past Chairman, Mastek Ltd, looking at the challenges of the IT industry pointed out that, resources was of top priority.

Currently, the segment had a work force of about 1.6 million, which is expected to touch 2.5 million by 2010 and 4 million by 2014.

He has urged the industry leaders to reach out to the educational institutions so that resources could be absorbed easily and noted that it could be done only if the industry had a control on the curriculum.
