Hind Motors management not to attend meeting

Our Bureau

Kolkata April 14 The management of Hindustan Motors (HM) has refused to take part in any meeting with representatives of trade unions until the latter commit themselves to maintaining law and order at the Uttarpara factory, according to Ms Soni Shrivastav, General Manager (Corporate Communications), CK Birla Group.

"Hindustan Motors management appreciates the initiative taken by the West Bengal Government's Labour Ministry to resolve the crisis at Uttarpara. The management is ready to talk with all or a section of trade unions who can give a guarantee to maintain law and order in and around the area," Ms Shrivastav told Business Line.

According to Mr Amitava Bhattacharyya, President, Sangrami Shramik Karmachari Union, (SSKU), one of the five registered trade unions of HM, "We are conducting lawful trade union activities. There has been no violation of law and order from our side. However, we cannot provide any guarantee to maintain law and order. That is the job of the police," he said.

"We have shown flexibility in our attitude. But the management is not showing any signs of resolving the issue. Till date they have not participated in a single meeting. Hence, we have decided to continue with the strike," Mr Bhattacharyya added.
