Programmes on tech education also initiated

Dharmasthala April 15 To commemorate its silver jubilee year, the Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) has launched three new programmes, including the one on cattle research aimed at developing indigenous breeds.

Launching the programme at the silver jubilee celebrations of SKDRDP at Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday, Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, President of SKDRDP, said that the Karnataka Government has sanctioned eight acres of land near Dharmasthala for setting up a cattle research centre.

Research will also be taken up for developing by-products such as `go-arka', gobar-gas, vermi-manure, and organic manure. Farmers are to be trained in organic farming under this programme. It is proposed to invest up to Rs 25 lakh for the programme — `Kamadhenu' — in the first year.

Motivating children

To create awareness about the possibilities in technical education among the members of the self-help groups promoted by SKDRDP and to motivate them to send their children to technical institutions for their graduate education, the organisation has launched a scholarship scheme for children of the SKDRDP-promoted self-help group members.

Under the scheme — `Sujnananidhi' — SKDRDP is planning to provide scholarships to 1,000 students every year. In the first year, SKDRDP has plans to disburse Rs 55 lakh.

The third scheme, `Navachethana', is aimed at providing financial assistance to schools and centres for differently-abled children. In the first year, SKDRPD is planning to assist at least five schools.

SHG growth

Dr Heggade said that the SKDRDP has promoted 45,750 self-help groups who have a cumulative savings of Rs 66.13 crore. The SKDRDP has brought a transformation in the living conditions of the people in the areas under its operation.

He termed SKDRDP as the biggest NGO micro-finance institution in the country. The Vice-President, Mr Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, launched these three new schemes on the occasion.
