TDS rate hike

Apropos the article "Woes of TDFS rate hike (Business Line, April 14), it is to be pointed out that this enhancement of rates of TDS has not been brought out clearly in the Finance Minister's speech but has been tucked away in fine-print.

The professional bodies, in their Budget reaction, too have not brought out their response to the move in clear terms. There is no point in enriching the Government with the use of funds that do not belong to it rightfully.

While this enhancement will only increase the burden of paperwork, it could also perpetuate the evils that often prevail in several Government departments.

It is surprising that there have been no protests, even from the affected quarters.

T.R. Ramamurthy
