BHEL develops gas insulated substations

Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 16 Engineering and power major BHEL has emerged as the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) from India in the field of gas insulated substations (GIS), with applications in power stations.

The Corporate R&D department of BHEL has successfully developed an indigenous GIS. It has also bagged the first letter of intent, from the Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTransco), for installing the first unit in the State.

The indigenous development has opened a new line of business for BHEL. The company has identified GIS as a strategic business, according to Mr S.K. Goyal, Group General Manager of the Corporate R&D here.

At the Corporate R&D, a Centre of Excellence in GIS is being planned.

Plans are also being firmed up to develop in-house technological capability in higher voltage range like 400 kV and 765 kV for domestic customers. In the case of APTransco, the requirement is for its 132 kV GIS to be used at its 32-50 MVA substation in Hyderabad, Mr Goyal told Business Line.
