Better air connectivity, ad campaigns pay off

Thiruvananthapuram April 16 Better connectivity and concerted marketing campaigns have helped Kerala register a 23.68 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals last year.

Figures released by Kerala Tourism show that a little over 4.28 lakh foreign tourists visited Kerala in 2006 compared to 3.46 lakh in 2005. Similarly, the total number of domestic tourists who visited Kerala last year was a little over 62.72 lakh against 59.46 lakh in 2005.

The single biggest factor for this rise in tourist arrivals is that over the past year it has become easier to travel to Kerala because of improved air connectivity, said Dr Venu V, Secretary (Tourism), Government of Kerala.

The Union Tourism Ministry's `Incredible India' marketing initiative has also helped. This international marketing effort positioned India as a desirable destination and Kerala has benefited from both the project as well as its own marketing campaigns, he added.

Revenues, both direct and indirect, from tourism have also risen from Rs 7,738 crore in 2005 to Rs 9,126 crore last year.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism have also shown a sharp increase of 28.09 per cent in 2006, clocking in at Rs 1,988.4 crore.

In fact, over a three-year period beginning 2003, Kerala's foreign exchange earnings from tourism have risen by a little over Rs 1,005 crore.

Based on figures for the first three months of this year, Kerala's tourism sector seems to be maintaining the same pattern of growth as last year, Dr Venu said.
