Elton John Foundation aid for HIV-hit kids

Hyderabad April 16 A foundation started by Elton John, the popular singer, lyricist and composer, has announced a special assistance to the children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Andhra Pradesh.

Christened `Balasahayoga', the $14-million scheme aims at supporting the children and their families, offering comprehensive care, moral support and treatment service.

Joining Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is Children's Investment Fund Foundation of the UK, National AIDS Control Organisation and AP State AIDS Control Society.

Since its inception in 1992, the EJAF has raised about $100 million to support HIV/AIDS-infected people around the world.

The fund, promoted by the UK-based singer, has so far supported 4,000 organisations in 55 countries. The Chief Minister, Mr Rajasekhara Reddy, will formally launch the scheme here on Tuesday.

At a review meeting on AIDS chaired by the Chief Minister, Mr Asok Kumar, Project Director of APSACS, said a new campaign called `0/7' is being planned with an objective to zero HIV infections among new born infants through vertical transmission, an official release said.
