Research & Development IronPort plans captive R&D unit in Bangalore Vishwanath Kulkarni
Bangalore April 16 IronPort Systems, a provider of e-mail and Web security products, which is being acquired by Cisco in an $830-million deal, is setting up a captive research and development centre in Bangalore.
Bangalore campus
The R&D centre would be part of Cisco's upcoming campus in Bangalore and will have a team of some 75 engineers in the first year of operations, said Mr Scott Weiss, CEO, IronPort. The company proposes to ramp up the R&D headcount to 150 next year, he said. "Our charter for the Bangalore R&D centre would be to develop all our products for the small and medium businesses (SMBs), right from product design, development to quality assurance among others. The Bangalore centre will have the ownership for the products developed here," Mr Weiss said. IronPort has been outsourcing its development work to two Indian vendors including TCS. "As we set up our operations here, we would consolidate our relationship with our vendors here," he said.
Cisco deal
Mr Weiss said the deal with Cisco would be completed in the next six weeks. "The acquisition of the company by Cisco has increased the awareness of IronPort by a factor of 20 in India, which should dramatically accelerate our sales in the country this year," he said. Further, the Cisco deal has provided us a better hiring platform for our captive centre here, he added. IronPort expects a revenue of less than $10 million from the Indian market this year, a growth of around 100 per cent. IronPort feels India and China would turn into large markets for e-mail and Web security products going forward.
