Paradip port may post 18% growth in traffic

Our Bureau

Kolkata April 17 In 2007-08, Paradip port's total traffic throughput is projected to grow by nearly 18 per cent to 45.36 mt as compared to 16.34 per cent growth at 38.52 mt posted in 2006-07.

The port's traffic projections for 2007-08 suggest that the port is to handle crude for the first time during the year and the throughput is estimated at 3.5 million tonnes (mt). But then much will depend on the commissioning of the much talked about Paradip-Haldia crude pipeline, the construction of which is not complete yet. It might be recalled that the commissioning has been postponed several times. The crude throughput of 3.5 mt for the current fiscal is therefore projected on the assumption that the pipeline will be commissioned around December.

The projected throughputs of other itemsfor 2007-08 are: petroleum products 1.5 mt as compared to 1.38 mt in 2006-07, iron ore 12 mt (11.88 mt), fertiliser raw materials (dry) three mt (2.86 mt), thermal coal 14 mt (12.47 mt), coking coal 4.5 mt (4.27 mt), container 5,000 TEUs (2,476 TEUs) and other cargoes 6.5 mt (5.5 mt).
