A major housing project at a cost of Rs 192 crore is also being taken up for the urban poor and 15,000 houses will be constructed.

Visakhapatnam April 17 The Union Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government have cleared seven schemes costing Rs 643 crore for the development of urban infrastructure and civic amenities in Visakhapatnam under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Mr Mukesh Kumar Meena, Municipal Commissioner, said that a major underground drainage scheme is being taken up to cover the central part of the city with a population of 5.33 lakh out of the total of 16 lakh, at a cost of Rs 244 crore.

The scheme awaits the administrative sanction of the State Government and soon tenders will be called for it.

Drainage Scheme

The replacement of the 65-km pipeline from Tatipudi reservoir to TSR complex to improve drinking water supply is another major scheme, taken up at a cost of Rs 62 crore. Work has started on the project, he said.

Tenders have been finalised for the laying of a pipeline from the TSR complex to Kommadi for water supply at a cost of Rs 23 crore.

Work has started on the construction of a colony at Vadlapudi at a cost of Rs 28 crore for resettlement of the people displaced by the Visakhapatnam steel plant.

Tenders have been finalised for two colonies at a cost of Rs 10 crore for the fishermen displaced by the Gangavaram port.

Awaiting Approval

A major housing project at a cost of Rs 192 crore is also being taken up for the urban poor and 15,000 dwelling units will be constructed, he said.

According to the commissioner, a bus rapid transport system has been proposed for the city at a cost of Rs 400 crore and it is awaiting approval of the Union Government.
