Power situation improves in AP

Imposed power cut likely to stay

In the last week, rains in some parts of the State have also eased out some pressure on the overall power demand.

Hyderabad April 17 With the rabi crop season coming to a close, the energy demand-supply mismatch has come down significantly allowing the State Electricity Distribution companies the flexibility to restore major chunk of the power supply to both high tension industrial users and domestic consumers.

The power cut had stretched up to 9 hours in villages and towns across the State to meet the increased demand from farm sector operations.

Power Cut

The AP Transco and four distribution companies have begun to provide relief to customers from Tuesday thereby paving way for better supply to high-tension industrial users too.

However, the power cut imposed could remain for some more time as the current demand supply situation does not allow total power cut withdrawal. The summer season demand has also added to the increased demand.

The State is faced with yet another problem as the farmers are exploring the possibility of third crop using pump sets by tapping into the ground water.

The demand may shoot up if some of the farmers take to third crop, according AP Transco officials. The farmers would now be advised against third crop.

Improve Supply

After a gap of few months since the power cut was clamped in the State, on Tuesday they have begun to get improved power supply.

The State had to face severe shortage as the hydel generation had drastically fallen due to lower levels in two major reservoirs of Nagrajuna Sagar and Srisailam dams, both major contributors for electricity, and significant drop in generation from gas based plants due to inadequate gas supply.

The Telangana and Rayalaseema regions account for a major chunk of the pump sets in the State — estimated at about 20 lakh of the total 25 lakh pumps sets. The power consumption from these pumps has dropped as the rabi farm operations have come to a close.

However, the coastal Andhra region, with about 4.5 lakh pump sets would require supplies for some more time. In the last week, rains in some parts of the State have also eased out some pressure on the overall power demand in the State.
