New Delhi April 17 The race for the top job of ONGC seems to be getting tougher. The Search Committee scouting for Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, which met today is understood to have considered the names of Mr Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman, Shell India, and Mr Swapan K. Bhowmik, Managing Director, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd, to be invited for the interview for the post. The Search Committee, headed by the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) Chairman, Mr N.K. Sinha, met today to consider the names short-listed as well as other candidates for the job. According to sources, the meeting was inconclusive and the committee is expected to meet again to decide on the list of candidates who need to be invited for the interview. The eight short-listed candidates said to be in the fray include the acting Chairman and Managing Director of the company, Mr R.S. Sharma.
50 applications
Over 50 applications were received for the job. The other names short-listed for the top position doing the rounds include, Mr Najeeb Jung, former Joint Secretary (Exploration) in the Petroleum Ministry. Mr Jung had quit the civil service and is now serving as Director of Energy Research in the Reliance Industries-funded Observer Research Foundation. He is currently posted in London. Other contenders include Mr R.S. Butola, Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Ltd; and the Directors of ONGC - Mr D.K. Pande, Director (Exploration); Mr A.K. Hazarika, Director (Onshore); Mr A.K. Balyan, Director (HR); and Mr U.N. Bose, Director (Technical Services). The Director (HR) of GAIL (India), Mr M.R. Hingnikar, is also tipped to be in the fray.
