Infrastructure States - Kerala 2,000 acres to be acquired for Kannur airport project Our Bureau
`The State Government does not propose to exercise its powers to force the closure of the PepsiCo bottling unit in Palakkad district.'
Thiruvananthapuram April 18 The State Cabinet has approved a decision to acquire 2,000 acres of land for the proposed Kannur airport. Briefing newspersons after a meeting of the Cabinet here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said that the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) would be the nodal agency for implementation of the project along the lines of the Kochi International Airport.
SMART CITY
The Cabinet resolved to approve next week the agreement for establishing the proposed Smart City project in Kochi being co-promoted by the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority, or Dubai Internet City. The Chief Minister said that the State Government was more or less satisfied with the response to queries posed to the Dubai Internet City officials. He also said that a broad understanding had been reached on whether part of the land being given as freehold would fall within the proposed free economic zone or outside of it, but refused to go into details. The agreement was being concluded in as transparent a manner as possible, Mr Achuthanandan said. Details would be shared with the Opposition as and when they are finalised.
Pepsi issue
Replying to another question, he said the State Government did not propose to exercise its powers to force the closure of the PepsiCo bottling unit at the Kanjikode industrial belt in Pudussery panchayat of Palakkad district. The Government was within its rights to act on the issue, but would prefer to talk first with the concerned people, Mr Achuthanandan said. It is another matter that the Pudussery panchayat was planning to go on appeal before the Supreme Court against a High Court order quashing its decision to deny licence to the multinational company. The Government was appreciative of, and supported the stand that the panchayat has taken on the issue. The Kerala High Court had recently clarified that panchayats have no jurisdiction over industrial estates.
