Poaching threat

Ritu Raj Konwar

NO PROTECTION: An Indian one-horned Rhino with her two-year-old baby inside the Kaziranga National park, 230 km from Guwahati, on Wednesday. Kaziranga, a world famous biodiversity hotspot and a world heritage site has seen a sharp rise in poaching this year and the death toll includes six one-horned rhinos from January this year.

According to the Kaziranga forest officials, shortage of forest staff and use of more sophisticated weapons by poachers are the two major problems in Kaziranga, which has the largest population of one-horned Rhino (more than 1,800) in the world.
