Eviction blow

A. Roy Chowdhury

NOWHERE TO GO: Paresh Saha, one of the thousands of hawkers who ply their trade on local trains, at Sealdah station. Saha - who sells small things for minuscule amounts - feels dejected following the Calcutta High Court order evicting "illegal" hawkers as well as beggars from the two railway stations of Howrah and Sealdah immediately.

The order came vis-à-vis a public interest litigation by a lawyer on Tuesday. Saha has been engaged in this sort of work for the last 37 years and with the income derived from it he maintains a six-member family, including a son with physical disability.
