Hardware Info-Tech - Alliances & Joint Ventures Fujitsu, Sun Micro unveil co-developed servers N. Nagaraj
New York April 18 Fujitsu Ltd and Sun Microsystems Inc have unveiled a new line-up of co-developed servers that will be jointly manufactured by both companies in the US, Japan and the UK. The systems sold by both companies will be identical, with only the branding differences and, more important for decision-makers, with service delivery differentiation. The new servers, based on the SPARC (r) architecture and running the Solaris (TM) 10 operating system (OS), are the fastest SPARC servers ever, and will be marketed by both companies and affiliates under the `SPARC Enterprise' product brand. The systems are ideal for customers typically financial services, telecom, data centre and Internet infrastructure companies requiring highly scaleable, reliable servers. Availability, system utilisation and performance are key areas and the latter areas are optimised through virtualisation. The SPARC Enterprise server line-up is the culmination of over two years of joint development between Fujitsu and Sun, building on their 20-year strategic relationship. The new servers address the growing customer need to maximise system utilisation by offering an array of highly granular partitioning and domaining technologies. The SPARC Enterprise servers are also designed to ensure minimal downtime. To protect customers' existing data center investments, Sun guarantees 100 per cent Solaris binary compatibility, meaning full backward compatibility to legacy systems running on older Sun systems. The new SPARC Enterprise servers will include six models. Entry models use the Ultra SPARC{trade} T1 processor developed by Sun Microsystems. Mid-range and high-end models use the SPARC64 VI processor developed by Fujitsu. These systems deliver up to 50 per cent more performance than current SPARC-based servers. All the new servers run the Solaris10 operating system. Mr Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice President - Enterprise Business, Fujitsu Siemens, said that India, along with China is a very important market and that the company has started a new division for India from April 1. Mr Tom Atwood, Group Marketing Manager - SPARC systems, Sun Microsystems, said that it was significant that one of the first few systems at this level was shipped to India.
