Mumbai April 18 Bajaj Auto plans to sell 6,000 units per month of the Bajaj Kristal (gearless 100cc scooter) in the next three months. The product, launched in January this year, is currently grossing sales of 3,000 units per month, said Mr S. Sridhar, Vice-President, Bajaj Auto. At the time of the launch, company officials had said the two-wheeler has the potential to log sales of 10,000 units per month. The gearless scooter, which was launched in the southern and western regions of India, will now enter the northern and eastern markets by the end of this month, said Mr S. Sridhar. To meet the rising demand, the company is about to increase production at its Akurdi plant from 2,500 units last month to 3,000 units in April.
DTS-I technology
Company officials acknowledge fierce competition with companies such as TVS Motor Company that introduced the TVS Scooty Teen at Rs 25,000. Bajaj Kristal retails at Rs 36,000. Kristal is the first scooter to have the DTS-I technology in the domestic two-wheeler scooter market. The new scooter offering from Bajaj has features such as front fuelling which allows one to fill the fuel tank without the driver getting off his seat and a glow key ignition switch makes it easy for people to switch on the two-wheeler in dim light, especially in the night. Crystal was first displayed at the biennial Auto Expo 2006 exhibition.
