Regulatory Bodies & Rulings Wockhardt gets US nod for selling antibiotic injection Our Bureau
Adding to basket `We are launching three injection products in the US this week' This is its fourth approval for an abbreviated new drug application in four weeks and the sixth injection in the US market
Mumbai April 18 Wockhardt Ltd has received a regulatory approval in the US for three more strengths of Ceftriaxone. This allows the Mumbai-based company to market the full range of the antibiotic injection in the US market. Wockhardt currently markets Ceftriaxone 1 gm injection. The new approval is for three additional strengths of 250 mg, 500 mg and 2 gm. With three more products added to its basket this week, Wockhardt's pipeline in the US goes up to 20 products. "We are launching three injection products in the US this week - Furosemide diuretic, Ketorolac anti-inflammatory and Ceftriaxone antibiotic," the Wockhardt Chairman, Mr Habil Khorakiwala, said in a note from the company. This is Wockhardt's fourth approval for an abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) in four weeks and the sixth injection in the US market. Ceftriaxone injection is a cephalosporin antibiotic for intravenous and intramuscular use. It is the generic name for Rocephin sold by Roche. The antibiotic product is widely used in global hospitals for treating types of bacterial infection, bone and joint infection, meningitis, abdominal, skin and urinary tract infection. The US consumes over 25 million vials worth $200 million a year, the note said, quoting industry data. The Ceftriaxone range will be marketed by the Wockhardt's US subsidiary, Wockhardt USA Inc. The US is Wockhardt's third largest market after Europe and India. Europe and the US markets together account for over half of Wockhardt's sales, the company said.
