Airlines States - Karnataka Mangalore airport records maiden profit A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore April 18 For the first time, Airport Authority of India's (AAI) airport in Mangalore has registered a profit of Rs 83 lakh. Increase in the number of aircraft movements both domestic and international at Mangalore airport has been attributed as one of the main reasons for this maiden profit. Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, AAI, Mangalore, told Business Line that the airport recorded an expenditure of Rs 10.19 crore and revenue of Rs 11.02 crore during 2006-07, registering a profit of Rs 83 lakh. This is only a provisional figure, and final figures are subject to audit, he said. During 2005-06, the airport recorded an expenditure of Rs 9.02 crore and revenue of Rs 6.22 crore, registering a loss of Rs 2.8 crore.
Jump in movement
It is to be noted here that the number of aircraft movements increased by 47 per cent during 2006-07 over the previous year. Mangalore airport recorded 6,669 aircraft movements during 2006-07 as against 4,528 during 2005-06. Established in 1951, the airport was handling only domestic flights till September 2006. In October, Mangalore became the second airport in Karnataka after Bangalore to handle flights to international destinations. The first international flight from Dubai landed in Mangalore on October 3, 2006. Initially, the service was limited to Dubai alone. At present, Air India Express operates flights to Dubai (five days a week); Abu Dhabi and Muscat (two days a week); and Doha and Bahrain (two days a week) from Mangalore. At the same time, there has also been increase in the number of flights to domestic destinations such as Bangalore and Mumbai.
