Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 19 The NDC (National Development Council) Sub-Committee on animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries has called for credit outlay of Rs 1,00,000 crore to farmers for starting livestock and fisheries units during the Eleventh Plan period.

Interest rate under this credit assistance should be at 3 per cent, it felt.

The sub-committee, headed by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, submitted its recommendations to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday.

The panel also recommended extension of insurance cover to cattle in order to protect the farmers against losses. It wanted the Government to aim for a growth rate of more than 9 per cent in animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries sectors to help agriculture achieve the targeted four per cent growth.
