Hyderabad to have US Consulate next year

Hyderabad April 19 A Consulate of the United States will start functioning at Paigah Palace, the temporary accommodation provided to it by the State Government, next year.

The Consulate will take possession of the Paigah Palace, which houses the offices of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA), in August and a lease agreement in this regard will be signed soon. The US Consulate will have its permanent accommodation near the Hitec City soon.

A top level US delegation consisting of Mr Alexander J. Kurien, Director, Strategic Planning Division, US Department of State Overseas Buildings Operations; Mr William A. Gibson, International Realty, Department of State, Washington; and Mr Mark Fry, Consular Section Chief, Consulate General of the US, Chennai; today called on the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, at the Secretariat.

Dr Reddy said that 40 per cent of those applying for visas in the US Consulate in Chennai were from Andhra Pradesh. A Consulate in Hyderabad would be beneficial to all.

Mr Mark Fry, who welcomed the Chief Minister on his forthcoming short visit to US, remarked that in places such as California, Telugu was among the most talked languages and said he learned Namaskaramandi and other Telugu words from California.
