HAPPY DAYS AHEAD: Mr Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, Ambassador of Denmark, and Mr S.K. Bangur, President, Indian Chamber of Commerce, after the inaugural session of the `Danish Days in Kolkata,' in Kolkata on Thursday. — A Roy Chowdhury

Kolkata April 19 Explaining the "Danish Days in Kolkata," concept as "Happy Days for mutual relationships to climb to a new high," essentially to boost business relations between Danish and Indian companies, Mr Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, Ambassador of Denmark to India, said here on Thursday that "good business does not necessarily follow the herd."

Explaining why Bengal, he said, this was the State where new business opportunities were emerging, and which could prove beneficial to Danish companies in the long run.

He also lauded the West Bengal Government for its efforts to attract investments into the State.

Speaking at an interactive session organised jointly by the Royal Danish Embassy, New Delhi (Trade Council of Denmark) and the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Kolkata here on Thursday, the Danish Ambassador said talks with businessmen in the State were in the preliminary stages, and detailed discussions would be held sometime next week with both State Government officials and private business.

Pointing out that many Danish companies have established solid roots in Bengal in the last 50 years, he said opportunities were emerging in areas like dairy and food processing (where Denmark enjoys a leadership position globally), manufacture of specialised medical equipment, infrastructure and communications technology. Danish firms are keen to participate in the expansion of the manufacturing sector in India, he added.

Lauding the Indian model of development, built on strengths in the services sector, he said Danish firms were keen to offer technology in areas like wind energy. Incidentally, Suzlon (the wind energy major) has its global headquarters in Denmark.

A large Danish business delegation, with representatives of companies like Grundfos Pumps, Per Aarsleff, CTiF & Nokia Denmark A/S, Scandinavian Synery, Handelsbanken, Nilpeter Asia Pacific, Scanmach Asia Co Ltd and Widex (hearing aid major) is now touring West Bengal, scouting for business opportunities with Indian companies.
