`Talent management' the new mantra for corporates

Chennai April 20 Can adequate reserves of capital and technology alone ensure the survival of companies? According to Mr A. Aravamudhan, Executive Vice-President-HR, TVS Lucas, resources such as capital, goods and technology can be easily sourced from across the globe. The key ingredient for survival in today's corporate world lies in "talent management".

Mr Aravamudhan was speaking at `COMBAT-2007' an intercollegiate management meet organised by the School of Management, D.G. Vaishnav College. The meet was held under the aegis of BL Club.

A team of efficient and smart people, besides speed-to-the-market were also essential ingredients that could make all the difference to a corporate set-up. But he warned that talent management was not just talent attraction in the nature of a human resources function. Rather, it should be handled as a management function, he said.

Mr Aravamudhan said: "The reality about talent management is that it is a total process. It is not an isolated event. It spreads across the whole company."

Speaking about the growth of the jobs market and the wide choice available to job seekers today, he said the challenge for HR today was "how organisations could retain employees with them in the backdrop of rising demand in the jobs market."

Another important challenge before HR managers was harnessing the lateral talent of their employees.

The industry required leaders and not just managers. Colleges, therefore, should produce more leaders than managers.
