Airlines Government - Policy Better deal likely for air travellers Our Bureau
New Delhi April 20 Harassed air travellers could soon get some relief from the Government. Taking serious note of instances of airlines not taking care of passengers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is likely to issue guidelines on how airlines should handle passengers in case of flight delays and other untoward incidents. "Within a month we should have something ready. We need to have a framework that makes airlines more accountable, allows some degree of compensation to passengers and also penalises the airlines in case they delay flights. We are taking a serious view of various incidents that have taken place recently," the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said. Officials indicated that the law would have to be examined to see what options exist with the Government to ensure that the rights of passengers were protected. Last week a British Airways flight between Delhi and London was delayed by more than 12 hours after the crew refused to operate the flight, claiming they had not been able to get enough rest.
