New Delhi April 20 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, assured the Orissa Chief Minister that the Centre would provide all possible assistance to the Orissa Government in helping Korean steel maker Posco acquire land for its proposed $12 billion greenfield steel plant in the State.

A high-level meeting was convened by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Thursday to deliberate on the causes for delay in Posco's plans and find a way to move forward.

The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, and the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia. The secretaries in the Ministries of Steel and Mines were also present. The Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, and the State Chief Secretary were present as well.

Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, Mr Patnaik said, "The Prime Minister has assured all necessary help and asked to expedite work on the project."

``We are doing our best to acquire the land and will do it in a humane and peaceful manner.''

He added that Posco has already forwarded Posco's application for the Kandadhar mines area and the Centre has assured that it would consider granting prospecting licence to the Korean company.
