Mumbai April 20 The two-day strike of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking was finally called of late Friday evening.

Mr Uttam Khobragade, BEST General Manager, told Business Line, that the worker unions have called off the strike unilaterally and unconditionally.

"We will continue to hold negotiations with the unions. We are never averse to talking to the union," he said.

Workers unions had called for a 72-hour strike on Thursday midnight for demanding a revised pay scale and interim dearness allowances. The management had give deadline of Friday 8.00 pm for the workers to report to back to work.

The BEST management had gone to the extent of serving termination notices to 5,000 workers out of the 32,000 who had gone on strike.

Till the strike was called off on Friday evening out of the fleet of 3,380 buses, only 86 buses plied on the routes.

The BEST also managed to rope in 170 buses of private operators for ferrying the passengers.

Earlier in the day while addressing the media, Mr Khobragade, said that the strike was illegal as the worker unions have not served the notice to the management.
