Project plans Initially, the company will invest $20-30 million in the facility and the project is likely to go on stream by end-2008.
Mumbai April 22 Srithai Superware, Thailand, is to set up a manufacturing facility for 100 per cent natural melamine in India. "The company is looking at various options but more or less, it will be in western India, probably Maharashtra, Gujarat or Goa," said Mr Sanan Angubolkul, chairman, Srithai Superware. Initially, the company will invest $20-30 million in the facility and the project is likely to go on stream by end-2008, he added. As of now, the melamine market in India is worth about Rs 200 crore and the company intends capturing 50 per cent of the retail market. The Thailand-based company is a global leader in 100 per cent melamine with a production capacity of over 11,500 tonnes per annum spread across four plants in Thailand and Vietnam. It exports to more than 65 countries in the world, including major markets such as India, Pakistan, West Asia, Europe and America.
Export hub
It now intends to turn its Indian operations into an export hub for the Indian sub-continent. Srithai's melamine products comprise tableware and kitchenware made of melamine powder. Pure melamine is harmless to health and heat-resistant. Mr Sanan said low quality and cheap melamine and urea products have high urea content, which is harmful to the body. There is no ban on urea-mixed melamine products in India.
