Many mega projects set to come up in the region

Mangalore April 22 The Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, Mr M. Veerappa Moily, sees more employment generation in Dakshina Kannada district in the coming years as the region is set to host various mega projects.

Addressing members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Sunday on the topic `Transformation of Dakshina Kannada district', Mr Moily said that around Rs 1.40 lakh crore of investment is likely in the region in the coming years.

Projects such as Mangalore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will lead to creation of more number of jobs.

Land acquisition

The formalities related to land acquisition for the Mangalore SEZ is likely to be completed by May, he said.

There is good scope for the effective utilisation of the New Mangalore Port — the only major port in Karnataka — as only 30 per cent of the land is being used now, he said.

This is not available in any of the other major ports in the country.

Mr Moily said that the Administrative Reforms Commission will submit its report on `Public Order and Police Reforms' to the Government in another 20 days. Another report on `Civil Services Reforms' will be submitted in two months, he said.

Mr Moily, who headed the Oversight Committee, said that the committee worked on the theme of `expansion, inclusion and excellence' in higher education. The expansion of some the major higher education institutions in the country is not more than one per cent in the last 40 years. However, many of the noted higher education institutions abroad have augmented by more than 300 per cent in the past several years. He said that the quality of higher education should be improved in the country.

The President of KCCI, Capt J.P. Menezes, presided over the meeting.
