CM wants 450 more centres set up in engg colleges

Hyderabad April 22 Following the inroads made by Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKCs) in grooming engineering graduates for technology careers, it is now proposed to establish about 450 centres in the State.

These centres would be opened in all the engineering, MBA, MCA and degree colleges spread across the State to hone up students' skills and tap into the IT sector.

This decision follows a review meeting the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had with officials of the Department of Information Technology and Communication.

About 53 JKCs are functional and it is proposed to scale this number to 500 aiming to train more than five lakh students of the engineering colleges and other degree students and make them employable in the IT and BPO sectors.

CM'S SUGGESTION

The Chief Minister has suggested that the ITC Department could make use of all the Government and private engineering colleges and degree colleges to open JKCs to facilitate the training of final year students.

These centres would also host language labs and other training modules needed to fine-tune skills and make the students fit for industry.

As per perspective plan, about two lakh students will be trained in 2007-2008 and another three lakh in 2008-2009.

Nasscom has predicted that there is likelihood of shortage of about 5 lakh people for the IT sector over the next three years. Significantly, as per estimates, TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Satyam together could add about five lakh people over the next three-four years.

The State has about 283 engineering colleges, 189 colleges imparting MBA, and 262 colleges offering MCA courses and 357 degree colleges.

Dr Reddy in a statement said that the JKC concept was working well and should be extended in phases to all the engineering colleges in the State.

He also suggested that the department of IT&C in coordination with departments of labour and employment should train the students from all the ITIs in the State to take up careers in services industries such as hospitality and tourism.
