To break the impasse at Uttarapara factory

Kolkata April 23 Trade unions of Hindustan Motors (HM) have urged the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, to intervene to break the impasse at the company's Uttarapara factory, according to Mr Amitava Bhattacharyya, President, Sangrami Shramik Karmachari Union, one of the five registered trade unions of HM.

At a meeting held with the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Mr Amit Kiran Deb, here today, the trade unions have asked the Government to help hammer out an amicable solution between them and the management.

"The strike has entered its 42 day. From our side, we want a solution. We have asked for the CM's intervention to provide an amicable settlement," Mr Bhattacharyya told Business Line.

Meanwhile, the HM management has put up yet another notice stating that the management would consider lifting suspension of work within 72 hours if the unions "unconditionally" assured "maintenance of discipline at all levels" and "demonstrate free egress and ingress to men and materials".

The release said: "It is very clear that a very small group of workers is obstructing the larger workforce from working. Should the assurances be given by all the unions and workmen, the management will positively consider lifting suspension of work within 72 hours, in a phased and step by step manner subject to the assurances continuing to be honoured."

A copy of the notice has been sent to the West Bengal Labour Department.
