Nasscom working on new initiative

New Delhi April 23 Software association body Nasscom on Monday announced that it would set up a self-regulatory organisation (SRO), an independent body to ensure implementation of security standards across the country. The body would seek to address the issues mainly pertaining to data security and privacy.

"While it would be voluntary for the members to be part of the body, it would ensure at the same time that market forces make it mandatory for companies to register themselves.

The legal framework exists for security breaches; but SRO would ensure some kind of punishment for companies not complying with these statutory provisions and it may be detrimental for their business," said Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik.

He added that Nasscom wanted SRO not to be perceived as an industry body and hence would work at arms length from Nasscom.

The body will operate as a separate entity that would be headed by Mr Shyamal Ghosh, who was earlier Chairman of the Telecom Commission and Secretary for the Department of Telecommunication.

Mr Ghosh said, "There would be several layers of membership, the details of which are yet to be worked out. We are also seeking agencies or the support of companies following the best standards to be able to audit these practices."

Nasscom has yet to decide by when the body would become operational.

At present, it is in the process of setting up a working group that would ensure training of professionals in the matter of security and educating employees and companies, besides ensuring compliance to certain standards.
