B-schools set to use podcasting

Preethi. J

Bangalore April 23 Following the trend set by Stanford and Berkeley universities, Welingkar Institute of Management, a Mumbai B-school, is planning to record lectures and make them available to its students over iTunes.

"We are in talks with the institute to offer it to the students of the new batch," said Mr Aditya, co-founder of the Web site www.theindicast.com, a Mumbai-based podcaster.

The 750 full-time and 13,000 distance-learning students will be able to download lectures onto their computers. The advantage of podcasting is that the user can time-shift the episode to a convenient time.

Since it works on the Internet's RSS (really simple syndicate) feed standard (which is used popularly to download news clips), podcasting automatically downloads onto your computer and can be synchronised with your mp3 player.

Podcasting is predicted to soon become a popular way to reach out to students on their own terms. Besides accessing missed lectures, students can also be encouraged to create their own podcasts.

Three popular Indian podcasters are Indicast, Kamla Bhatt and Podmasti. Each has different content, style and listener base. Indicast has a current user base of 4,000 dedicated listeners per episode. The firm is looking for funding to hire more hosts and invest in marketing to get more subscriptions. The first funding would be of Rs 30 lakh, said Mr Abhisekh, the other co-founder of Indicast.
