Tea States - West Bengal Dusts evoke good response at Kolkata Our Bureau
Kolkata April 24 At the auctions held last week in three tea auction centres in Kolkata, Siliguri and Guwahati, CTC and dust offerings evoked good response. Assam CTCs sold at irregular rates following quality with prices of good brokens ranging between Rs 110 and Rs 120 per kg and fannings between Rs 90 and Rs 105 per kg. Dooars CTC witnessed good competition and sold readily at useful levels, particularly the better sorts, with prices ranging between Rs 90 and Rs 100 per kg. Medium sorts were between Rs 70 and Rs 80 per kg. Darjeeling teas saw good demand from the Continent with medium whole leaf prices varying between Rs 350 and Rs 400 per kg. The local dealers, however, opted for the smaller grades and the lower-end whole leaf. Orthodox teas also saw good demand from the CIS as well as North Indian markets, with good whole leaf holding levels between Rs 105 and Rs 120 per kg and the larger brokens between Rs 90 and Rs 100 per kg.
CROP PROSPECTS
Reports from North India's tea growing districts suggest that the crops are going through a lull period after the first flush. The weather condition is conducive to the onset of the second flush in May. The all India crop up to February at 35.9 million kg was lower than that in the same period of the previous year by 3.9 million kg. The reports of crop returns in March indicate a further drop.
