AI Cargo gets first freighter Airbus A310 aircraft

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 24 Air India Cargo, a subsidiary of Air India, has taken delivery of its first freighter A-310 aircraft and plans to start dedicated cargo operations on the India-Kuwait-Germany sector shortly. "The aircraft, an AirbusA-310 that was earlier being used for passenger operations, has been completely refurbished and delivered to Air India. The aircraft may begin operations in June," a senior airline official said. The airline is to convert six Airbus A-310 aircraft into freighters at an estimated cost of $6 million each.

The decision to look at converting the Airbus A-310 aircraft should help the airline become a more serious player in the growing cargo market.

Currently, Air India enjoys a market share of 10 per cent of the total exports and about 12 per cent of total imports.
