Arecanut prices slip

Our Correspondent

Kottayam, April 24

The price of new arecanut has slipped to Rs 70-75 a kg following low demand from the north Indian circles. Though there were reports of curbs on import, again fresh arrival from Indonesia has seriously affected the indigenous market according to sources. The imported arecanut inclusive of duty costs only Rs 50 a kg. Compared to last year, the present arrival comes to 40-45 per cent only, according to sources close to Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative (Campco), Thrissur. The sales also have narrowed considerably. There is no transaction for Kottadakka Choll, as no arrivals are reported in the market. In Kerala, the area for arecanut is fast shrinking due to the poor offtake.
